After 11 Years of Buying PA Gear, I Stopped Looking at Wattage and Started Looking at TCO

The truth about "which is better"

Let me start with the answer people don't like: it depends. The good news is, "it depends" is not the end of the conversation. It's the start of a list of scenarios. I've been handling equipment orders for 11 years. I have personally made and documented 31 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $22,000 in wasted budget. I now maintain our team's checklist so nobody else repeats my errors.

The biggest lesson? Stop comparing specs on a spreadsheet. Start comparing total cost per successful event. That's what I mean by TCO (i.e., not just the purchase price). It includes the purchase price, setup time, transport, storage, power, maintenance, and the cost of a failed show.

The three scenarios that cover most audio gear decisions

Why split it this way? Because TCO changes with the job. A speaker that is perfect for a walking tour is overkill for a school gym, and a high-end loudspeaker used in a bad room is a very expensive doorstop.

Scenario 1: No power outlet, no time, no patience

If you've ever rolled a 100-foot extension cord through a hotel kitchen, you already know why this is a separate scenario. This is where a Mackie Thump GO 8 portable battery-powered loudspeaker earns its place. It is not a concert PA. It is a workflow tool.

Honestly, I'm not sure why I resisted buying one for so long. My best guess is that I equated "professional" with "heavy and awkward." Then a one-event emergency changed my mind. We had four hours to set up after a venue mishap. No power access, no stage electrical plan. We grabbed a Thump GO 8 portable battery-powered loudspeaker from another room, ran it on battery, and the meeting started on time.

I almost ordered a generator instead. Had two hours to decide. In hindsight, I should have checked the event plan more carefully. But with the clock running, I did what I could. The battery speaker was the right TCO call because it eliminated the generator rental, the fuel, the extension cords, and the "can you hear me now" phase.

Not ideal for a 300-cap room. Better than nothing. Exactly what we needed.

If your work is announcements, workshops, solo acoustic sets, ceremonies, or a class that changes rooms every hour, this type of powered speaker belongs in the discussion. Just verify the real battery runtime before buying. The advertised number is often optimistic.

Scenario 2: You have AC power, a speaker stand, and a van

If your jobs are rehearsals, small clubs, breakout rooms, and bar stages, the Behringer PK115A (15" 800W powered PA speaker) is my usual starting point. It's not the last word in fidelity. It's a workhorse. It has a 15-inch driver, an amp module built into the box, a pole mount, and a price that doesn't make you tremble when a kick drum bumps it.

Some people will tell you to save up for a "better" brand. I won't. I've watched expensive loudspeakers sit in storage because owners were afraid to damage them. The best PA speaker is the one your volunteer crew will actually move.

Let me rephrase: a $650 invoice that includes speaker, pole, and spare cable can be cheaper than a $450 quote plus delivery, adapters, one emergency repair, and a missed call time. What I mean is TCO includes downtime.

In my first year (2017), I made the classic "buy one expensive box because reviews said so" mistake on a 12-inch speaker. It sounded good. But I couldn't afford a second one, so I had no backup. Three months later it got dented in transit. I had to rent a replacement for more than the cost difference. A pair of PK115As would have been the stronger TCO move.

At least, that's been my experience in small multi-purpose venues. In a large touring rig, I would probably choose differently. But for simple, repeatable live sound, the PK115A is hard to beat.

Scenario 3: The room is treated, and the conversation is about bass or full-range resolution

If you are looking at the SVS SB-4000 subwoofer, you're not solving a PA portability problem. You're trying to get usable low end in a controlled space. Sealed subwoofers like the SB-4000 tend to be easier to integrate than ported ones in a normal-sized room, and the built-in DSP helps with system tuning. But the TCO includes a microphone, measurement software, and a couple of weekends moving furniture.

A subwoofer is not an upgrade to a PA speaker system in the same way a drummer is not an upgrade to a cajon. Both can coexist in a larger setup, but you need a clear goal before adding one. If your only complaint is "the bass is weak," first make sure the speakers are placed correctly and the room isn't canceling the low end.

I have mixed feelings about the high end. On one hand, I respect the engineering in the Magico M9 loudspeaker. On the other, if the room and source chain aren't at the same level, most of that investment is invisible. My honest take: buying an M9 before treating the room is like buying studio monitors before learning what a reflection point is. Not wrong, just early.

What about the Behringer System 100? Same framework. A module looks affordable until you add the case, power supply, patch cables, and the hours of learning. If you want to create a complete synth voice, budget for all of it. The module is not the system.

How to decide which scenario you're in

Here's the practical part. Answer these questions before you open a spec sheet.

  1. Is there reliable power at the venue? If no, battery-powered options like the Thump GO 8 should be in the conversation.
  2. Do you need to fill a room with band-level volume, or just make a voice clear and intelligible? If it's the latter, a portable battery-powered loudspeaker is often enough. If it's the former, an active PA like the PK115A is a more honest tool.
  3. Is the room acoustically controlled? If no, the SVS SB-4000 subwoofer and the Magico M9 loudspeaker won't show their full value. Fix the room first.
  4. What is the cost of being wrong? If a failed event is expensive, buy redundancy or buy speed. A two-speaker system with a spare cable usually beats one irreplaceable box.

My checklist after the $22,000 education

I still use the same checklist on every equipment order. It starts with these three notes:

  • What is the minimum setup time today?
  • What is the single point of failure?
  • What will this cost per event over two years?

The question isn't "Which is best?" It's "Which gets me to a good outcome with the least total cost and risk?" None of the products above are bad. The only bad purchase is the one made before you know the scenario.

As of April 2025, verify current specs and prices from the manufacturer pages for Behringer, Mackie, SVS, and Magico. My old invoice numbers don't matter. Your next event does.
