The Bottom Line
I've been the procurement manager at a 22-person event production company in the Midwest for about six years now. I manage our audio equipment budget—roughly $47,500 a year, or around $285,000 cumulative across my tenure—and I've logged every single order in our cost tracking system. It's not glamorous work, but it means when someone asks me whether they should buy new Behringer gear or chase deals on refurbished audio mixers and budget speakers from other brands, I don't have to guess. I have a spreadsheet.
Before I get into the numbers, a caveat: I'm not an audio engineer. I can't speak to circuit topology, DSP architecture, or why a preamp sounds the way it does. What I can speak to is the invoice data, the repair logs, and the total cost of ownership (TCO) calculations we've built from half a decade of doing this both ways. And the numbers told a different story than I expected when we started.
The Comparison Framework
We ran two procurement paths side by side over the past six years:

Round 1: Total Cost of Ownership—The Result That Surprised Me
Going in, I assumed refurbished gear would be the clear TCO winner. You're buying the same capabilities at a lower price point, right? In our experience, not even close.
In early 2022, we purchased a refurbished audio mixer for $860. The equivalent new Behringer model was $1,120 at the time. On paper, that's a $260 saving—about 23%. Here's what actually happened after the purchase:
- Month 6: Power supply failure. The seller's warranty? 90 days. Long expired. Repair cost: $240.
- Month 11: Two channel faders started crackling during a rehearsal. Replacement parts and bench labor: $310.
- Month 14: A dead channel on the main output. This time we sent it to a different shop. $380.
Plus rental costs while the unit was out of service—we had to rent a replacement mixer for three events at $75 per day. That's another $225.
The TCO for our "bargain" refurbished audio mixer: $860 + $240 + $310 + $380 + $225 = $2,015.
The new Behringer mixer, with a three-year warranty: $1,120. Out the door. Done.
That's an $895 difference on a single unit. In percentage terms, the "budget" option cost us 80% more than the new unit. I've seen this pattern repeat across four of the eleven refurbished purchases we've made since 2019. Not all of them—some refurbished units have been perfectly fine. But the ones that failed, failed loudly.
Round 2: Reliability—Where Refurbished Gear Gets Complicated
Let me be fair before I continue. Some of our refurbished purchases have been solid. We bought a used outboard compressor in 2021 that still passes audio and holds its calibration; a refurbished equalizer from 2023 has also been trouble-free. I don't want to paint every refurbished unit with the same brush.
The problem is the variance. With new gear, you know what you're getting. With refurbished gear, you're buying the refurbisher's process—and processes vary dramatically between sellers.
In Q2 2023, we purchased a refurbished audio mixer for a 12-week corporate event series. The listing said "shop tested, ready for stage use." I said "ready for stage use," meaning we'd be loading it in and out of five different venues, sometimes daily. The refurbisher, as it turned out, heard "ready for a studio that never moves." We discovered the gap on day four, when a channel fader failed during a live client event.
I can't get into the client details—NDA—but the financial damage went well beyond the $180 repair. We had to switch that client's account to a rental house for the final six weeks of the series. That cost $1,200 in rental fees, plus the meeting afterward to rebuild trust. The "good deal" on the mixer ended up costing us close to $1,380 in collateral costs alone.
That experience pushed us to implement a procurement policy in 2023: new equipment for anything mission-critical, refurbished allowed only for non-critical backup or gear that lives in a fixed installation and never leaves the building.
Round 3: Features and Technology—Where New Behringer Gear Pulled Ahead
The FCC's wireless frequency changes in 2020 forced us to replace our legacy analog wireless mic setup—the old band was no longer legal to operate. We evaluated a few paths and landed on the Behringer ULM300MIC digital wireless system at $449. This was one of the easiest procurement decisions we've made.
The difference wasn't just price. It was the features that changed our day-to-day operations:

Something similar happened with drum machines. For a rehearsal studio we operate, we wanted that classic 909 sound. The used market pricing for an original TR-909 is anywhere from $4,000 to $5,000 for a clean unit. That wasn't going to make it through procurement review. Is the RD-9 identical to a real 909? No. Our studio engineer described the kick drum transient as "remarkably similar" but admitted it's not a perfect replica. But for rehearsal, songwriting, and the occasional live backing track, it's close enough. At roughly 7% of the price of a used original—with a warranty—the TCO math was never in question.
Round 4: Sound Quality and the Loudspeaker Nonlinear Model
I need to confess something honest: until about two years ago, I had never heard of the loudspeaker nonlinear model. Our sound engineer had to sit me down and explain why two PA systems with identical wattage can sound completely different at volume.
Here's what I understood from his explanation, in procurement terms. Loudspeakers don't behave perfectly linearly as power increases. When you push a driver harder, the relationship between the input signal and the acoustic output starts to become nonlinear—the speaker begins producing distortion that wasn't in the source. How a speaker handles this high-excursion behavior determines how much usable headroom you actually have before things turn harsh.
This matters practically because we tested six PA systems in 2024 for one of our smaller venues. The Ion Total PA Freedom speaker was in the running because it's a popular budget pick—portable column arrays, integrated wireless, all-in-one convenience, at a street price around $399. For a quick acoustic gig where portability matters more than high-SPL performance, it's genuinely a clever product.
But the Ion lost in our blind listening tests. Multiple engineers on our roster independently described the Behringer PA system as holding its clarity at sustained volume, while the Ion got coarse when pushed. What they were describing, as I now understand it, is that the Behringer drivers kept their nonlinear behavior more controlled at high excursion. The sound stayed musical instead of breaking up.
To be clear: the Ion unit didn't break or fail during our testing. Reliability wasn't the issue. It was headroom. And whether that matters depends entirely on what you're using it for.
Which Path Should You Choose?
After six years of tracking every invoice (yes, I'm that guy with the spreadsheets), here's the decision framework I'd offer to other B2B buyers:
Choose new Behringer when:
- The gear sits in the mission-critical signal path—wireless mics, main PA, front-of-house mixers.
- The product category is evolving rapidly (digital wireless, digital mixers).
- You need warranty support because downtime counts real dollars.
- You're a small operation without an in-house technician to service gear.
Choose refurbished or budget alternatives when:
- The gear is for a fixed installation that won't be moved or loaded in and out.
- You have a qualified tech on staff who can handle repairs and maintenance.
- The technology in that category hasn't changed meaningfully in a decade.
- You can verify the refurbisher's actual service documentation—not just their sales copy.
One thing I will never do again: buy refurbished gear from a vendor who can't tell me exactly what was repaired, what was replaced, and what was tested. "Professionally inspected" is not an answer. It's a vague phrase that shifts the risk onto you.
The Bottom Line
I went into this comparison with a genuine bias toward refurbished gear. I wanted the budget path to be the smart play—it would make my job easier if I could confidently buy refurbished and save money.
The data didn't cooperate. Across our six-year dataset, new Behringer equipment averaged roughly 12% lower TCO than refurbished alternatives in comparable categories. Not because Behringer is infallible—we've had a new unit fail once, and the warranty covered it. But because unpredictable variables in refurbished gear cost more than the visible variables in new equipment.
I also have mixed feelings about this conclusion. Part of me worries that I'm dismissing the value of keeping gear in circulation, and the good refurbishers who do honest work. Another part remembers the $895 overrun, the client conversation, and the faith I lost in someone else's "inspection." Those memories are more persuasive than my environmental ideals—or rather, the spreadsheet doesn't care about my ideals.
As of January 2025, our policy remains unchanged: new for the critical path, refurbished for fixed installations, and always verify the refurbisher before you buy—no exceptions.
