The Real Cost of Cutting Audio Corners: A 6-Step Buying Checklist for Reliable PA & Studio Gear

If you're buying gear for a venue, a mid-size production company, or a studio, you've felt the squeeze. You need professional sound, but your budget isn't infinite. I've been on both sides—overspending on premium gear that didn't justify the cost, and getting burned by the 'cheap' option that failed in the middle of a show.

This checklist is for the person who signs the PO. It's for the TD who needs PA that works for six months of touring, and for the procurement manager—like me—who has to justify every line item to accounting.

Here are six steps I use to cut through the noise and land on gear that won't cost you twice.

Step 1: Define Your Actual Coverage (Don't Guess the SPL)

Before you look at a single price tag, map the space. I learned this the hard way: I once under-specced for a 300-seat theater because I assumed a single 15-inch passive speaker would be enough. It wasn't. I had to rent a subwoofer at the last minute for $400. That 'savings' evaporated.

  • Draw the room or venue: depth, width, ceiling height. Note any acoustic nightmares (lots of glass, odd shapes).
  • Calculate the SPL you need: A quiet acoustic show is different from a rock band. A general rule: you need at least 6 dB of headroom over the loudest expected source.
  • Check your power amp specs: You want 1.5x to 2x the continuous power rating of the speaker to handle transients cleanly. Underpowering a speaker is actually what kills it—distortion from clipping is the real killer.

I use a spreadsheet to track the coverage area. For a standard 100-150 person room with spoken word and background music, a pair of Behringer B110D active speakers (1300W peak) would be plenty and sit well under budget. Everyone asks: active speakers are easier, right? Yes. But they also have the amp built in, which means if the amp fails, the whole speaker goes down. Passive speakers let you swap amps independently.

I still kick myself for buying active monitors for a rehearsal space without thinking about the failure point. When the amp in one speaker died, the speaker was useless until repair. With a passive setup, I'd have swapped the amp in 10 minutes.
