Why Your '2000W' Powered Speaker Sounds Weak: A Quality Inspector's Take on Behringer and Specs

Last month, a customer sent me a screenshot comparing a Behringer B112D and a no-name 2000W powered speaker. The first line of his email said: 'Why would I spend more on the Behringer when this one has 500 more watts and costs less?'

I've spent six years as a quality and brand compliance manager for a pro audio distributor, reviewing roughly 300 products a year (which, honestly, has made me permanently skeptical). The Deep Problem: Power Ratings Are a Language, Not a Number

Most buyers assume a 2000W speaker is roughly twice as loud as a 1000W one. It isn't. Perceived loudness is logarithmic, so you need about 10 times the continuous power to double perceived volume. But that's only the start of the confusion.

There are three common ways to rate amplifier power: peak, program, and continuous (RMS). Peak is a marketing number. Program is a guess at music content. Continuous is the one that tells you how much heat the amp can handle for more than five seconds. It is also the number most likely to be hidden in the fine print (note to self: always ask for RMS at a specified THD, never at 10%).

Here's a concrete example from my own QC bench. In a 2024 audit of 15 active speakers, I measured peak-to-RMS ratios ranging from 1.3:1 to over 3:1. The Cost of Skipping Power Amplifier Verification

So what happens if you don't verify the specs? In the short term, you get low output and harsh clipping. In the long term, you can blow a driver or overheat an amplifier module.

We had a real case in 2022. A supplier delivered 60 powered subwoofers with '1000W peak' labels. Our standard test required 350W continuous at 1% THD, 20 to 80 Hz, into 4 ohms. A Simple Verification Routine

Their spec sheets usually list continuous power with a THD figure, which is more than I can say for many no-name brands. However, that doesn't make them the best choice for every scenario. I've also seen Behringer's budget line struggle when pushed hard with heavy bass. That's exactly why they sell separate subwoofers. An active mini subwoofer is often the right answer for adding low end without replacing your main speakers.

If someone asks me 'Which is better: Behringer, Yamaha, JBL, or something else?' I'll say it depends on your use case. The vendor you should trust is the one who tells you where the edges are, not the one who claims to be a master of everything.

The next time you google 'behringer b112d price' or compare a 'behringer pk110a speaker' to another box, remember that the cheapest dollar-per-watt is often the most expensive dollar-per-reliable-dB.

Take 20 minutes to verify the amp's RMS rating, THD, and usable bandwidth. Ask for the fine print. Bring a song you know by heart. If a product can't pass a simple listening test, the exact number on the box doesn't matter.

One last thing from my QC side: the brand that is honest about its limitations, saying 'this isn't our strength, here's who does it better,' is the one I keep buying from. That's not a slogan. It's a survival strategy.
