Why Your PA Sounds Thin (And Why Buying More Watts Won’t Fix It)

I’m the office administrator who gets asked to “just get a speaker that works.” For the last five years I’ve managed AV and equipment purchases for a 200-person company—roughly $80,000 a year across 15 vendors. I report to operations and finance, so when something doesn’t work, it lands on my desk twice: once as the purchaser, again as the person explaining why we need to spend more to fix it.

The surface problem always looks like wattage. A conference room, training session, or town hall that was “fine last year” suddenly sounds thin. If you ask a non-engineer why a PA sounds weak, they’ll point to the wattage. More watts must mean more loud. But the problem is almost never that the amplifier is too small—it’s coverage. A column loudspeaker uses multiple small drivers to control vertical dispersion. The “2 inch loudspeaker” drivers in a spec sheet are a feature, not a size compromise. They send the sound farther with fewer dead zones than a conventional speaker sitting at knee height.

The assumption is that a powered subwoofer will make everything sound fuller. The reality is that a subwoofer only adds low-frequency energy. If the top box isn’t placed and aimed correctly, adding 500W of sub just makes the sound muddier.

Take our experience. In 2022, I convinced myself the room needed a sub. The rental arrived, we set it up, and the first thing the presenter said was, “it’s louder but I can’t understand myself.” The sub was doing its job; the problem was the top speaker’s position and the echo from the glass wall. The solution wasn’t more sub. It was moving the speaker and adding a proper pole.

The Deeper Issue: Wattage Was Never the Point

People think higher wattage means a louder system. Actually, wattage is a maximum input limit, not a description of what a room will hear. Two different speakers with the same wattage can have completely different sensitivity, dispersion, and max SPL. That’s why a 200W column speaker can deliver clearer speech than a 500W wedge in a tricky room.

The related mistake is treating all amplifiers as the same creature. There’s another layer. A “2 inch loudspeaker” in a column array is doing a very different job than a “2 inch loudspeaker” in a desktop monitor. The Cost I Didn’t Budget For

The first time I fixed a bad setup by ordering a bigger subwoofer, the internal client was happy for two days. It wasn’t a catastrophic failure—just a long, annoying tail of hidden work. The system ended up used less than the cheaper speaker it was supposed to replace.

I’ve learned to ask “what’s NOT included?” before “what’s the price?”. The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end.

Total cost includes the product, mounting hardware, cables, shipping, setup time, and the possibility you bought the wrong thing and need to buy it again. That last line item is the most expensive.

What I Do Differently Now

I went back and forth between a smaller active column system and a traditional 12-inch PA for two weeks. On paper, the 12-inch box had more power. But my gut kept saying the column would do a better job in our long, narrow room. Ultimately I chose the column because the coverage pattern matched the space better than the wattage number.

The process is now simpler:

  • Ask for a demo or rental credit. A speaker in a warehouse is not the same as a speaker in your room.
  • Get a complete quote: speakers, subwoofer, loudspeaker pole, cables, covers, shipping, and basic setup.
  • If a spec sheet says “2 inch loudspeaker” or “1000W peak”, ask what it does in a room, not just what it can handle.

That’s the real goal. Buy a complete system, not a collection of specs. The supplier who shows the full cost upfront will probably get the order—and the room will sound like it.
